Laura Romaine is a painter who builds a realm of artifice and exaggeration. Based in Brooklyn, she works primarily in oil and acrylic. Her inimitable figures exude a carnal playfulness that revels in the tactile splendor of painting.
Her path to the studio was not a straight line. After receiving her BFA from Ringling School of Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida in 2005, she drifted away from art entirely and into the urban punk scene, drawn to its recklessness and the sense of intensity it offered. Those years brought heavy drug use and a long, disorienting search for something to believe in. Little in that world offered a way forward. What eventually did was painting, first as a tether, then as a language, giving her a way to metabolize chaos into form. The studio became the first place she found meaning that didn't disappear the next morning.
She earned her MFA in 2022 from the New York Academy of Art in Tribeca, New York, where she completed a prestigious one year Chubb Fellowship in 2024. Her work has been shown in Austin, Dallas, and New York, as well as at Art Basel Miami.
